Happy Tuesday !
Welcome to ET weekly, Energy Terminal's weekly newsletter where we cover trends, opportunities, events and updates across the energy industry. As our final issue before the new year, we want to highlight the biggest events we saw within energy this year and some milestones from the team at Energy Terminal.
In this issue:
π Highlights from this tumultuous year in energy
π Milestones for the Energy Terminal team
π A sneak peak at 2023
Wow, what a year.
From the IRA to the war in Ukraine, the energy industry saw a lot of ups and downs. Here's your 2022 energy wrapped highlighting the biggest events that shaped the industry this year.
βThe Inflation Reduction Act: $370B for clean energy
The IRA is the most significant piece of legislation for energy and climate in decades, earmarking nearly $370B for sectors including EVs, batteries, renewables, and domestic manufacturing. Companies in these areas saw their valuations soar as tax credits could cut their costs by up to 40%.
π’οΈRussia-Ukraine War sends markets rocketing, EU scrambling
In response to the war in Ukraine, oil prices soared by as much as 50% and Europe plunged into an energy crisis. At the start of the war, Russia supplied as much as 40% of European natural gas, and the EU has looked to LNG imports, biogas, and European production to reduce its Russian dependence.
π World leaders meet in Egypt at COP27
In November, climate and energy leaders flocked to Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt to talk energy and climate policy. While support for the energy transition is widely acknowledged, we didn't see the level of concrete support we were hoping for.
ποΈ The SEC proposes mandated climate disclosures
As investors and climate activists push for more transparency on corporate emissions and climate data, companies are preparing for the possibility of being required by the SEC to do so. ESG data services and auditing companies would see a boom should this get approved.
βοΈ Fusion ignition is achieved
Just a couple weeks ago, scientists at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory used 192 massive lasers to achieve the first evidence of net energy gain from a fusion reaction. This is a big breakthrough for fusion fanatics, but commercialization is still decades away. See our recent LinkedIn post for more info!
πΈ Billions in private capital for energy startups
We saw tons of exciting deals this year and hope for similar growth in 2023. Hot sectors included EVs, energy storage, biofuels, and carbon removal, specifically around companies that benefitted from the IRA.
