Investigative climate journalism + the potential of hydro power. Check out this week’s handpicked reading list to learn more about these groundbreaking energy topics πŸ”₯

πŸŽ™οΈPodcasts:

My Climate Journey, Investigative Journalism and the New Climate Creator Movement

  • There are many online social platforms that are anti-clean energy

    • These platforms generally take the form of FaceBook groups, and these groups perpetrate the spread of misinformation about different clean energy technologies, like wind energy

    • Much of the misinformation surrounded the idea that wind farms nearby made you feel sick, i.e. the presence of wind turbines in your community would cause you to get headaches and nausea

  • Michael Thomas, investigative journalist, immersed himself in these groups and found that the digestion of the misinformation led to many people experiencing the symptoms of misinformation being spread

    • Individuals were experiencing placebo like effects of what they were reading in these anti-clean energy groups

Volts, How to make small hydro more like solar

  • Small hydro has a lot of potential as a renewable energy source because of benefits like high reliability and consistent energy production, but challenges like high upfront costs and environmental issues need to be acknowledged prior to implementation

  • Two ways to make small hydro more attractive:

  1. Simplifying the permitting process for small hydro projects to encourage more private investment

  2. Increasing the flexibility by incorporating energy storage technologies so that the intermittent nature of water flow can be accounted for

  • Including communities in decision making is essential when it comes to small hydro projects

πŸ“°οΈ Articles:

Bloomberg Businessweek, Moving Saharan Sunshine to Europe via Undersea Cables

  • In April, UK and UAE investors committed $37.6 mill to the idea of an undersea cable stretching 2000 miles from Morocco to the UK

    • However, the cost of the entire project, including solar + wind installations and the undersea linked cables, is expected to be $23.59 bill

    • The system, in theory, would have the capacity to power 7 million homes

  • This idea, of linking countries with different weather patterns together, may be effective in helping renewables be the world’s new source of energy

Canary Media, Should the US mandate EV battery recycling?

  • Those arguing in favor of a recycling mandate believe that it would ensure a consistent and efficient recycling process, in addition to incentivizing investment in recycling infrastructure and promoting new recycling technologies

  • Opponents frequently raise concerns over the feasibility and cost implications of a mandate, stating that a mandate could slow innovation and limit the flexibility needed to adapt to emerging technologies. They also argue that it could create a monopoly in recycling and burden smaller manufacturers

  • There needs to be a holistic approach involving regulation, industry collaboration between automakers, battery manufacturers, and recyclers, and R&D when it comes to EV battery recycling
