🎙️Podcasts:
Climate One, Will Sustainable Aviation Ever Take Off?
Summary 📖 :
Civil aviation is responsible for ~3% of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide
Some suggest that SAFs (Sustainable Aviation Fuels) are the best solution for longer flights, but shorter flights could use alternative technologies like battery electric or hydrogen fuel cell planes
One of the best long term solutions existing at the moment is using technologies like cellulosic biofuel to turn things like trash into low carbon biofuel
POLITICO Energy, The supply chain risks to Florida’s power restoration efforts
Summary 📖 :
Millions of Floridians are left without power after Hurricane Ian
Restoring power in Florida may involve complete rebuilding lots of grid infrastructure
There is an ongoing supply chain crunch that is going to cause major problems in the grid after future natural disasters
U.S O&G producers are responsible for more methane leaks than originally thought - this is a serious problem for the environment
Redefining Energy–Minutes, Minutes: October 2nd, 2022
Summary 📖 :
Coal becomes more expensive than oil
6 rules from Gerard: 1. Re-Wire / 2. Re-Source / 3. Re-Industrialize / 4. Re-Invest 5. Re-Regulate / 6. Re-Design
📰️ Articles:
Canary Media, Manchin’s Permitting Reform Bill Splits Dems, Pro-Renewables Groups
Summary 📖 :
The Energy Independence and Security act was introduced in the Senate by Senator Joe Manchin and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer
The proposed bill would streamline renewables development timelines but also ease pipeline and fossil fuel permitting processes
One of the biggest impacts of the bill is providing for new high-voltage transmission systems, which will be crucial for growing demand and growing renewable development
Time, Gas Companies are Promoting Hydrogen to Heat Homes. But the Science Isn’t on their Side
Summary 📖 :
Hydrogen is highly useful for the energy transition, especially for use in sectors like transportation and aviation
However, there are more efficient solutions for heating homes than hydrogen, these include electric heating pumps and connecting buildings together with district heating systems
Hydrogen is not a good choice to heat homes due to thermodynamic principles, thus, when used in homes it is expensive and requires more electricity than more efficient heating solutions
World War Zero, Taxpayer's Savings From Offshore Wind Blow Oil and Gas Out of the Water
Summary 📖 :
A report from the Center for American progress found that offshore wind power gives more money back to taxpayers that oil and gas
The study found that natural gas leasing produces 34MWh/acre, while offshore wind produces almost 41MWh/acre
40% of Americans breathe polluted air, so transitioning to cleaner sources could greatly improve US public health by reducing air pollution levels
