🚨 Episode 19 Out Now
In Episode 19, Michael and Chloe Young, Energy Terminal’s Director of Partnerships, are joined by Dr. Alice Hill, David M. Rubenstein senior fellow for energy and the environment at the Council on Foreign Relations. Dr. Hill is a thought leader, author, and policy maker who has written two books on climate resilience. Previously, she served as special assistant to President Barack Obama and as Senior Director for Resilience Policy on the National Security Council, where she led the development of national policy to build resilience to catastrophic risks. The episode draws on Dr. Hill’s extensive experience in the public sector to identify the most-needed policy developments, how we can succeed in getting pro-energy policies passed, and where students can get involved. We then talk about the specific ways public and private entities can work together to increase our energy system’s resilience to climate threats and how we can combine technical and policy strategies to maximize effectiveness.

🎙️Podcasts:
How I Built This with Guy Raz, Universal Hydrogen, Paul Eremenko
CEO and Co-Founder of Universal Hydrogen, Paul Eremenko, joins HIBT to talk about his vision for hydrogen to decarbonize the aviation industry
Compared with alternatives like SAFs, the technical barriers for hydrogen are immense, but Paul sees hydrogen as the best long-term option to reduce aviation emissions
Universal Hydrogen has raised $85 million to transition aviation to green hydrogen
Intelligence Matters, Global Energy Expert Daniel Yergin on Energy Security
Daniel Yergin is a leading figure in energy, geopolitics, and the global economy, and was recently named “Energy Writer of the Year” for his book “The New Map”
Yergin discusses how the Biden administration is balancing efforts to increase oil production with their climate agenda
Basic markets today are very tight with limited additional supply, so any additional disturbance to the global energy market can lead to a dramatic increase in prices
POLITICO Energy, How a stalled Minnesota mining project challenges Biden’s clean energy goals
This Minnesota mining project is a central issue between democrat and republican fights over where to get minerals needed for the clean energy transition
Biden has a goal of a 100% carbon free grid by 2035
There is conflict over getting the critical metals needed for the energy transition without hurting the environment that we are trying to protect
📰️ Articles:
KCRW, This climate solution saves water and creates solar energy
California plans to cover exposed water canals with solar panels
If solar panels cover all 4,000 of California’s open canals an estimated 65 billion gallons of water would be saved from evaporation and 13 gigawatts of renewable power would be generated
Covering the canals with solar panels also tackles the issue of land use, there will be no increased ecological damage to the area around the canals, like there normally is with other solar panel installations
Newsweek, U.S. Eases Oil Sanctions on Venezuela, Chevron to Resume Some Production
The US lightened its oil sanctions on Venezuela, allowing Chevron to resume pumping crude oil in Venezuela and export it to the US.
Chevron can now work on existing projects in Venezuela through a 6-month license that can be canceled by the US at any time, and once the 6-month period is over, it will have to be renewed monthly.
This authorization shouldn’t impact international oil prices and a senior Biden administration official said that the decision wasn’t made in response to the global high oil prices.
NY Times, New York Enacts 2-Year Ban on Some Crypto-Mining Operations
New York recently enacted a ban on new cryptocurrency mining permits at fossil fuel plants to mitigate the high carbon emissions associated with the energy-intensive practice
The ban will not affect existing mining operations or new permits for crypto mining powered by energy directly from the grid or from renewable energy sources
