π This Week in Energy π
1)π China's Major Emission Declines:
China, the world's largest greenhouse gas emitter, has a potential to bring in a serious period of emission decline as renewable installation ramps up. The new solar capacity installed in China in 2023 doubles the existing capacity installed in the US. Will this keep up? Learn more here.
2)π Lithium's New Home in Arkansas:
There are opportunities for huge job growth in Arkansas' region of oil fields as Exxon plans to build lithium mines. The transaction was around $100 million, and has the potential to mine enough lithium to power 50 million electric vehicles (EVs). Lithium mined in the US has the potential for a much smaller environmental footprint than abroad. Learn more here.
3) β Native American Tribes' Concerns over Renewables:
A $10 billion renewable energy project has been halted in western Arizona due to concerns of the Tohono O'odham Nation, San Carlos Apache tribe, and archaeologists over damage this project will do to significant religious and cultural sites. Bulldozers have already demolished a historical site of the Tohono O'odham Nation. Learn more here.
